Bologna on plexiglas

The experimentation allows to achieve the change. The change makes it possible to achieve renewal. The renewal allows to reach the uniqueness. Maurizio Carpanelli once again surprises us with the proposal of a new cycle of figurative works, made in enamel and acrylic on plexiglas, and depicting his beloved city of Bologna. It is a new and original technique that allows to overcome the physical limit of the canvas thanks to the transparency characteristics of the glass surface. The artist has decided to tackle this technical challenge whose secret is to find the right balance in the encounter between the different elements. The result is an incredible game between absence and presence, color and transparency, lights and shadows: the lines appear to move on the plate and the shadows on the wall behind create a three-dimensional effect and volume, giving us the impression that the image come to life in the third dimension. A technical innovation that allows the transparency and the absence of becoming themselves protagonists and let the surrounding context within the work through the reflections that from time to time are formed on the plate. There is a uniqueness in the vision, because the feeling is of a pictorial surface in flux: it changes with the changing of the light and its direction and distance from the support on which the work is installed, but, above all, it changes depending on our point of view and how we set ourselves in front of it.  Each work is never a repetition of previous ones. For these first Bologne on plexiglas, the artist decided to use only the coloring of the black, making sure that every single detail would break away from the background and emerges in its autonomy, creating a effect uniform and homogeneous. The historical buildings stand out with elegance and refinement, and people, portrayed in their simplicity and naturalness, make the work of a real city life scene. A few dashes that in their summary nature and speed of execution can not only depict people with their different attitudes, but transform them into living presences on the surface, fueling even more the feeling of balance in motion. Who walks and who rides a bicycle, who is sitting and who is standing, who is in a hurry and who proceeds calmly, who is alone and who in the company, who is approaching and who goes away ... the examples are numerous well as are multiple appearances of the city in the hours passed, the days and the seasons. Never the same and at the same time always unique and unmistakable. The instability of this new form of painting finds its consolidation and its balance, surpassing all the apparent artistic contradictions.
